2023 STEM Aviation Expo

The Tuskegee Airman Legacy still contributing to educating, inspiring and motivating the next generation of aviation's future. Join us this summer at STEM Aviation Expo.

Lavelle Dehughes

Los Angeles, CA

Lavelle DeHughes is a first-generation college student attending Tuskegee University majoring in Aerospace Science Engineering from Los Angeles, California, and graduating from King/Drew magnet high school of medicine and science with a 3.5 Gpa. He will be graduating in 2023, pursuing his career in commercial aviation for either delta or southwest. While flying, his most favorite aircraft is a Boeing 747. Aside from flying, he loves fishing either saltwater or freshwater for halibut and bass.

While learning about the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in World War II, he changed his perspective on life, making him want to fly. He took his first flight in March 2021; he completed 9 hours of flying time. However, he's transitioning his primary focus on passing the FAA written exam before the spring semester begins so he can continue flying. Pursuing a career in aviation made him want to do something different others hardly do. Paving the way for the future generations after him, soon to become a commercial pilot to get passengers to and from their destination.

He's currently working with the Red Tails Scholarship foundation to receive his private pilot's license. They offered him a once-in-a-lifetime experience to make it all happen in February 2021. He's very thankful for the opportunity. While Lavelle has been in ground school, he has sharpened his skills in attention to detail which enhances his progression through his flight training Lavelle has learned so much in the past months while attending ground school. He states that if it weren't for the foundation's help, becoming a pilot would still be a dream because of the cost of flying. "The highest human act is to inspire." - Ermias Asghedom.
